There are surely as many approaches to learning music as there are musicians, and I'd like to begin with my disclaimer: I'm no scholar, only a self-taught musician. I am educated enough to know that, sadly, many dozens of online "lessons" are a complete and total waste of one's time.
A decade ago, I began work on a project that I affectionately call my Millennium Scale Concordance. What began as a quest for the "ultimate" reference work on scales and modes, particularly those which could be described as "exotic", became an indescribably huge endeavor. My research has led me to some very informative websites, but too often I've been sorely disappointed by the quantity of errors and inconsistencies I've found. |
I learned quickly that such a work does not exist, and eventually I expressed my frustration to a fellow musician who challenged me to compile one myself. This work is a mere fragment of my attempt, the fruit of many hours of tedium, aided by a reliable Mac, countless pots of coffee, my guitars and my very tolerant wife. Originally intended to find its way into print, I began in the early 2000s to adapt it to the web.
